dear Mikki and Katie…

running in the backyard this Sunday evening on your Halloween sugar high, i grabbed my camera. nervously. i haven’t taken any photos of you two in about 3 weeks. i was nervous that i had forgotten how to take pictures of you. nervous that i would mess up your moment by getting in the middle. nervous that i wouldn’t take it fast enough and the moment would melt away through the cracks of time. i layed on my back with my camera on my tummy and looked up at the white sky. the grass, still wet even though it was past noon, stabbed my bare skin where my shirt had ridden up in the back. the two frosts we have had this year had taken the softness of summer away. i waited for a moment to click. i promised myself to only take one snap…no others. i listened as you both played with abandon as if i wasn’t there. you came near me, i sat up and clicked my shutter. i didn’t even check my exposure. i didn’t check my ISO. i didn’t check anything. i set my OCD free for this one photo. {you can laugh…its funny}

this picture is imperfect, but it was of you both having a genuine moment that i didn’t have to force you to have and that makes it perfect. sometimes photographing you guys can be compared to photographing animals in the wild. oh you know i’m there, and like any photographer’s child you are well trained in posing, or worse, hiding. this moment was unrehearsed and unadvised. yay.

of course, it looks adorable. but mikki, you are really getting ready to atempt a choke hold on katie.
