dear katie and mikki…

katie…yesterday was your 3rd birthday. it has flown by like a surreal set of high circus swings…with ups and downs, and arounds, and motion sickness, and of course, laughter. as i looked at you munching deliriously happy on you cupcakes {plural} i thought of the day we brought you home, the change that took place in our lives after, and the amazing rhythm you have brought to our family existence… it has been, like i said…a circus.

and for a moment, i caught myself thinking…almost saying…”oh i wish i was that young again”. this is something i swore, as a child, i would never say. because despite my happy childhood, growing up has its own pains and its own struggles; perhaps more than even becoming an adult. as a little girl, i remember wishing and hoping to become an grown-up…full of knowledge, and control. as it turns out, every stage of life, although filled with so much joy and happiness, has difficult periods of misunderstanding, heartache, and loss. so, i don’t wish to be your age…i don’t. i am just glad to be your mom, watching you literally eat joy in a cupcake covered with too much sugar…made with love my me, and frosted by your sister. right now we are battling potty training, next it will be homework and school activities, then boys, then graduation from high school, college, marriage (maybe), kids (hopefully). . . it will all blur by. just like the past 3 years.

its amazing what can happen and change in just 3 years of life…i wonder what will happen in the next year.

all my love darlings,

mommy.

p.s. daily mantra: you have to do your own growing no matter how tall your grandfather was….{abe.lincoln}
