dear Mikki and Katie…

when in doubt of yourself, take your shoes off and go barefoot.

this, i must admit, is strange advise. but this tried and true, self-help method has saved me many a trip to see the psychologist. i am sure you are just pensive awaiting my near air tight methodology behind this rather unconventional hypothesis about self actualization. after all, we do live in maine, and taking off ones shoes may cause permanent physical damage to ones extremities during cold weather conditions. rest assured, girls, letting your piggies free for a short minute, even in the ridged, almost arctic new england winter snow, will be fine.

when in doubt of yourself, go barefoot. because there is something about feeling the earth beneath the quiet crinkles of your toes that keeps everything more real and honest. if you look at it existentially, your feet truly take you EVERYWHERE you want to be…from the fridge to the 1st grade to the moon even if you wanted. feeling the world that you are walking on, without outer layers and personal prejudices, will always make you have a greater appreciation for your life, your journey, and the journey of others.

Mommy’s Recipe for Barefoot Philosophy

step one} be ready for feeling “real”.

step two} find a good spot. girls, you cannot just go picking any spot. look for spot that is not only safe, but ready to except your feet. i like moss and clover patches and, oddly enough, a puddle with a thinnish layer of ice where you can still see the bubbles but you don’t break through. it its important to find most emotionally pleasing spot for you personally.

step three} take off your shoes

step four} if you have socks, put them in your shoes so they don’t get wet or dirty.

step five}put your toes down on the selected surface.

step six} flex your toes, press the pads of your feet into the earth…feel what is beneeth you.

step seven} take a deep breath.

step eight} katie, take a deep breath..gosh girl, do you ever slow down.

step nine} take a look around you, but don’t move from your spot.

step ten} think about how much mommy loves you.

step eleven} feel better.

step twelve} put your socks, shoes, or sandals back on

step thirteen} keep right on walking….

all my love darlings,

Wow…I’m trying this just as soon as I’m done proofing this session. AND…LOVE THE FEET PICTURES! Every session with kiddos should include one of these. What a fabulous idea@!

Awww, I love your Wednesday Whistle posts. It *almost* makes me wish I was a little kid again, and you were my mommy! :) Sounds weird, but you are so genuine and your words are priceless. Love the photos.

I love your Whistles. I would add sand–not just any sand, but firm wet beach sand. Stand long enough, and still enough, for the water to begin pooling beneath your toes. Wiggle them,, feel the sand shift out of the way and the pools grow beneath your toes. Move to the wave zone. Stand. Let the waves wash over your feet, and pull the sand out from beneath them. Watch how you are uncovered and buried, and connected, all at the same time.

By the way, I read your thread about your style dilemma. Mandy, don’t even fret about technique perfection and numbers and all that jargon. You have the most organic, emotional, intuitive style I have seen–you paint with light, and your photos are luminous and connect on a viseral, emotional level. Don’t worry about the numbers…what you do, the connections you forge, last longer than any EXIF data!!

I LOVE how you are writing so many heartfelt sentiments to your girls! And have incredibly gorgeous pictures to accompany those words!! You need to write a book for the world to read, you are insanely talented.

Wow! Your photos and your writing amaze me. I bet your girls are in awe of you, your thoughts and talents. BTW if they are still to young to appreciate you just wait they will.

I too am a big fan of the notes to Mikki & Katie. If you are not a professional writer, then you have missed a wonderful calling. Your photo / journalism style is worthy of publishing (and I secretly hope you do publish it one day). Love everything about this post.

Wow Mandy – you have such a beautiful way with words!! I can almost feel the earth under my toes as I am reading this!! And it’s oh so true – I love walking barefoot… never tried it in the Winter though!! :)

Bobbi - June 4, 2009 - 9:52 am

Now I want to paint my nails…and then stick them in some mud. Weird lol. I love this Mandy. I was quite the tomboy as a kid so I was barefoot all the time and there is not a better feeling sometimes. Unless you are racing your brother down the gravel path, but I won so it was worth it.

Ummmm. This is bad. I’m sitting at my desk, reading this, eating lunch, and now I’ve taken my shoes off! (Please God, don’t let anyone come in right now.) There’s no grass in here, but I’m eyeing that plant over by the window. . .

gill m - June 4, 2009 - 7:28 pm

what a gorgeous thought ! and i’m sitting here barefoot as i read it – perfect !!! thank you !

These pix are very sweet, and the advice is sage.
