The Wednesday Whistle: Something New
This week I will be starting something new for the blog called the Wednesday Whistle. This will be a consistent posting on a weekly basis {on Wednesdays…for no other reason than I really like the way the words Wednesday and Whistle sound together…word dork…I know}. This “whistle” will be a letter to my girls…about them, about our life, about silly, happy, funny, maddening, meaningless, sad, wonderful things. My goal is to create a book of each of the 52 postings per year for both of them. Sometimes they will be short…sometimes long….sometimes personal…sometimes not. They will ALWAYS include a daily mantra. I am obsessed with those things. Oh…and a picture.

dear Mikki and Katie…
it’s Mom. i thought it would be neat {corny} to write you a weekly letter. now, at your young and impressionable ages, you are going to like it. in a few years, when you are STILL young and impressionable but will insist that you are not, you will hate it. a few years after that when you are still younger than me…maybe have children of your own and realize your mother knows and was right about everything {because i will be}, you will like it again.
the letter is going to start off with my one dream for you both: become yourself. i think this is hard for girls…we are constantly imitating everything {sigh….hannah montanna, or other girls, or {gasp} our moms}. even grown women do this. while growing up, you will probably try on lots of different versions of yourself, and that is okay. in the end though, be your own unique girl.
{oh, and go to college}
all my love ladies….Mommy.
P.S.
Daily Mantra: “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are. ” {e.e.cummings}

Ok Mandy your blog just keeps getting better and better! I love your little letter here and someday Mikki and Kate will to! I esp love the last (go to collage).. you rock girlie and awesome photo!
I used to do this when my daughter was a baby, and I fell out of the habit. I need to start doing it again! Can you write my letters for me?
You should have others join in – - if you want! And have them link back to you! This is a TERRIFIC idea. You are such a loving Mama!
I have been following your blog daily for a while now and it always inspires me. I made some cupcakes with my children today because of you! This idea and the way you have started it made me cry it’s such a beautiful gift to your girls. I have two girls (and a boy, equally important but different in his boyishness) and I hope to pass some love on to them as you do daily to yours. We’re very British over here and not given to this kind of thing. I wish we were and you make me want to try.
What a wonderful idea – and what a cracking piece of advice for your girls. Of course, they won’t realise just how wise it is until they are old enough not to care what people think about them
What a beautiful thing for your girls to have in years to come and look back on when they have their own children!
Great idea, Mandy. Love the ee cummings quote–he is one of my favorite poets
Beautiful! I feel privileged to be able to read along.
Wonderful portrait.. Great catchlight on the eyes
What a beautiful sweet idea! I am sure you daughters will treasure this when they are older! I wish my mom had written to me like that!
Great perspective and coloring!
Beautiful shot and LOVE this weekly letter you’re doing to your girls! What a wonderful and fabulous keepsake that will be to them in the years to come!
What an awesome idea! I am sure your girls will much appreciate this when they are older.

Oh Mandy… how I WISH I had your way with words! This is beautiful… brought tears to my eyes! What a beautiful gift to have for your girls when they are old enough to understand… xoxo
That is such a wonderful thing! I tried to start writing to my daughter when I was pregnant with her but I wasn’t very good about keeping up with it. I think this would be an awesome thing to start doing again though. Thank you for sharing this. You obviously have some very fortunate children to have such a loving mom!
What a terrific idea! Absolutely priceless!
Your daughter is beautiful, and I love this idea! You’re really going to be glad you did this years later. I need to do more things like this; it’s too easy to get too busy!
Beautiful image of your daughter! Love the note to them and the idea. They will love it.
