DaILy MaNtra: “Mom, the turkey is dead…why did you name it?”
{mikaya.quinn.burse}
Yeah…I name the turkey. It has the same name every year…Tom. I picked “Tom” up from Hannaford yesturday at approximately 11:26am after painting in the new house since 5:34am. Needless to say I was not in the mood for a crowd as I still had my painting clothes on, and I realized as I was entering the store that I was about to brake my solemn vow to NEVER, ever wear my sweat pants to the grocery store. With drips of Glidden {paint} dried in my hair, I grabbed a cart, and started my shopping. Since I looked gross, I of course, ran into every person known to live in Rumford/Mexico, Maine.
“Amanda, honey, how are you doing? How are the kids? You are looking like you are up to something.”
I know that “up to something” means I look awful, and I say a brisk “good cheer”.
Next stop…meat department- the store manager is there helping to hand out the birds.
“Nice to see you Mrs. Burse…Tom is back here for ya. How are the girls? Wow…are you doing some home renovations…some painting perhaps?”
Yes, the store manager knows I name my turkey. It’s a small town.
Deciding I must look wretched, I keep my head down the rest of the way through the store. This whole excursion lasts approximately 45 minutes because I couldn’t bribe anyone to let me cut {I didn’t have make up on..that is why} in line at the check out, and costs me $141.26.
Despite the high cost of Thanksgiving, Mike, the girls, and I have so much to be beside ourselves blissful about. The home renovations are moving along, Mikki is loving Kindergarten, school is going great for Michael, I get to live my dream of being a photographer each and every day, and Katie is, well Katie, and we are thankful for her just the crazy way she is.
Less blab, more pics, right? Here they are.

{Above: Katie enjoying desert…because she didn’t eat any dinner, of course}

{good to the last bite…I wish the girls were old enough to do dishes}

Ahh! I love this series, particularly the turkey in the oven shot. I can’t believe that you already posted this- bravo!
Wow!! You pictures are amazing!! You had a lovely post on Misty’s blog….I really enjoyed it and it made me pick up the phone and call my 3rd grade girlfriend!!! Thanks!!
mmmmm yum that is one good lookin turkey. love that last shot
What wonderful documentation of the day! I felt like I was right there with you… the girls look so sweet as usual (even in the uncooperative photo, LOL). Tom looks amazing with his “tan” (and your “rest in peace, Tom” photo reminded me I desperately need to clean my oven, tee hee). And isn’t that how it always goes- the one time you go out looking less than acceptable, that’s the time you run into EVERYONE you know. LOL.
Did you cool Thanksgiving dinner for the 4 of you? ALL the dishes? Wow! That turkey looks a whole lot better than our raw in the center bird…
What wonderful Thanksgiving photos! I can practically smell Tom cooking!! I know what you mean about running into EVERYONE on the one trip you make looking less than perfect, that’s how it always works!
What a great record of your holiday! Love these shots–the one of Tom in his oven is wonderful. Looks like everyone had a great day, Mandy!!
What a beautiful documentation of your day. I would never be able to post a photo of my oven–too embarrassing.
Born storyteller!!! Love that you name your turkey!!!
and love your shots!
Wonderful!
Though naming the bird then wishing it well as it goes into the chamber of death is a bit morbid, don’t you think?
These are so beautiful, love that turkey in the oven shot looks yummy. And the pictures of Katie eating her pie? Her curls are gorgeous, could I be more in love. Glad you had an amazing Thanksgiving and that life is going so well.
Awww what a great way to capture the day. I love Tom in the oven, there’s actually some good lighting in there!
I love the little details you caught. . . . and of course, that happens to me in the grocery store too. The worse I look, the more people I run into. Never fails! Here are some things I’m very impressed with: you actually took a photo of your oven. . . mine was way too dirty!; even your oven thermometer looks clean (that I should just throw out and get a new one; maybe the oven too); you actually tie up old Tom. . . I always think about it, and then think it’s probably just something that could burst into flames in my oven, because it’s STRING, so I don’t use it because I just don’t get it; and your girls are the cutest, most delightful sweeties on the planet (in case you hadn’t noticed, but I know you have!) Happy Thanksgiving, Mandy!
looks yummy! glad you had some helpers
These are some great shots! You have a way of making the everday look awesome, I can see these in a cooking magazine!
